Note: Real television networks have been holding Upfronts for the past two weeks announcing their new and returning shows. It's like a tv show press conference. I've been glued to reports from the Upfronts for the past few weeks, so I decided to make one for Spy Like Me as a way to tease the new season. Think of it as Michael Ausiello but much less annoying. There are mild spoilers ahead.
UPFRONTS, DAY ONE
Today was Bnl Production's Upfront Presentation for returning series Spy Like Me. I am reporting all the info I got from the presentation itself as well as some questions I asked the cast and creator after the presentation ended.
All of the main cast as well as the creator were there. First scoop of the day; John Krasinski (Keith), who was a recurring cast member, is now a regular. He looked pretty happy about it. Apparently the deal went down a mere few days before Upfronts.
They then showed a quick video montage of last season.
Series Creator Ashley Loftin then made a few announcements. She confirmed that Jada Pinkett-Smith's character Richardson is set to return as a recurring charactere. She also confirmed the casting of Oscar nominee Terrence Howard in a recurring role. She didn't say much else, just that he wouldn't appear until the six or seventh episode and that his character is an eccentric billionaire. High School Musical star Lucas Grabeel is also joining the cast as a friend for Dylan. And then it was time for questions.
The first question of the day was about the fate of Nate, who was clinging to life in the finale. Ashley only said Nate is still in a coma when the new season starts, three months after the events of the finale.
A few more reporters asked for more information about Nate, but they got shut down.
Evangeline Lilly (Angie) was asked if her character would be back working at IIA in the fall (she quit in the finale). Her answer, no.
Kyle Gallner (Dylan) was then asked if he has had to do more action scenes so far this season. Kyle replied jokingly, "None yet. What's the hold up? I have super strength! Get me in the ring or something!"
Several people posed questions about the possible return of the villains from last season. "Anyone who lived is up for grabs," the creator answered. "But there's definitely a new threat this season." As to who that was, she didn't say. And believe me, I asked.
A reporter asked John Krasinski about the baby storyline surrounding his character and if Emily Blunt (Rachel) will be back. He deferred the answer to Ashley who said the baby would be born early in the season. As for the return of knocked up ex Rachel, who was set to go back to England in the finale, she's still in England next season, but Emily will return.
After a few more not as interesting questions, the presentation ends. I was able however to get some cast members to answer a few questions afterwards.
I immediately tracked down Kyle and asked him about his new shaggy 'do and the changes in his character so far this season.
"They asked me to grow my hair out," he answered. "It's one of the many changes I've noticed. Obviously Dylan's really angry and confused. He really doesn't know who he is and where he belongs."
I talked to Sandra Oh (Ms. O) about the return of Richardson and what this means for her character.
Sandra said, "Ms. O and her tactics are being watched more closely this season. Her decision to hold secret meetings behind IIA's back last season didn't go over too well."
I then asked all three of the spies (they really do get along in real life!) about what's going on with them when the show resumes in the fall.
Evangeline (Angie) said, "She quit in the finale so basically she's only dealing with her brother and school. Not that that isn't plenty for her to be dealing with."
"Jen's just being Jen, trying to fix everyone else's problems and do her job. But she's obviously way out of her element in dealing with all her friends' problems," Rachel Bilson told me.
Kristen Bell (Liz) assured me, "Liz was probably the least personally affected by everything that happened last season, but she's got her own drama."
This is what Adrian Grenier said when I asked him about his same named character.
"Adrian dealing with the fallout of a situation he knows nothing about. His best friend went through hell, and he doesn't know that. He just knows something's different."
I got my last bit of scoop from the series creator herself who added to the news that the premiere jumps forward three months. She said, "The premiere shows where everyone is now and fills in a few gaps in between." Hello flashbacks!
So that's it from the Spy Like Me presentation. Check back for my report from the La Vie Boheme presentation.
